AAA is a lot like the WWE. It's the largest promotion in Mexico, with the biggest roster (and more "big names"), but unlike the WWE with their so similar wrestling styles, AAA has a wrestling style for everybody, from the lightning-quick high-flying luchadors to the musclehead brawlers and everything in-between. AAA's production is nearly equal to the WWE's, with state of the art lighting and camera-work, and huge overblown entrances. Like the WWE, AAA is very storyline-driven, with factions warring with factions, rather melodramatic feuds over championships, and a variety of different types of gimmicks.
Where it differs from the WWE: gimmick matches and blood are quite common, the matches on TV are not over in 5 minutes, women wrestlers are treated AS wrestlers because they CAN wrestle, women can and do wrestle men (mostly in mixed tag matches; AAA even has a Mixed Tag Team Title), the TV main events MEAN something and are not mostly ruined by run-ins, there are many stables and factions, and their World Champ (Dr Wagner Jr) is loved by pretty much everybody. The number one contender (El Mesias) is nearly as popular as Wagner.
AAA has something for everybody.
CMLL is more like ROH. Smaller promotion with a smaller roster. The production is good, as is the camera-work, but not as grandiose as AAA (or the WWE). ROH empasizes good technical wrestling mixed in with fast-paced high-flying moves and rather stiff Japanese "strong" style kicks and strikes. CMLL is VERY traditional lucha libre. Not too much deviation in styles, but all of them are so highly-trained and highly-skilled that it doesn't matter. EVERY match is a fast-paced high-flying acrobatic spectacle performed by the traditionally masked luchadors (they aren't all masked, but most of them are). Most matches are, again, the traditional lucha libre 6-man Tag Matches. Gimmick matches and blood are extremely rare. CMLL has a rich roster of very talented "minis" (including the amazing Mascarita Dorada; the best "midget" wrestler I've ever seen, bar none!) who aren't treated as sideshow freaks or comedy relief. CMLL's women's division is full of VERY talented female luchadors (TNA's Sarita is an alumnus of CMLL); they don't wrestle men, though (they have many more female wrestlers than does AAA, and CMLL's women's division is much better than AAA's, the WWE's, AND TNA's).
Which promotion is "better"? Because of it's appeal to a broader range of fans, AAA gets the nod for that reason, I guess.
Which do I prefer? CMLL. Although AAA is MUCH better than the WWE, it's a little "too" WWE for my tastes (with it's overblown rather melodramatic storylines, and skits). CMLL is as traditional as Mexican pro wrestling gets. They adhere to the old saying, "just shut up and wrestle" (promos are short and to the point, there are no skits and backstage segments, and the storylines are played out IN THE RING. I have been a fan of lucha libre since I first saw Mil Mascaras. To a lucha fan such as myself, CMLL is heaven.
CMLL is my favorite promotion of all I watch. AAA is number three (after ROH).
